Who is Cafatine for ?

Cafatine is used to prevent or treat migraine and cluster headaches. Cafatine prevents blood vessels in your head from expanding and causing headaches. Cafatine is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

 

When should I be careful taking Cafatine ?

Before taking Cafatine,

  • tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to ergotamine tartrate, caffeine, or any other drugs.
  • tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially erythromycin, nifedipine (Procardia), prazosin (Minipres), propranolol (Inderal), troleandomycin (TAO), and vitamins.
  • tell your doctor if you have or have ever had severe high blood pressure; severe itching; Raynaud's disease; poor circulation; coronary artery disease; a severe infection; or blood vessel, kidney, or liver disease. Call your doctor if you develop an infection while taking Cafatine.
  • tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Cafatine, call your doctor.
  • plan to avoid exposure to cold temperatures, where your hands and feet will become cold, because this drug decreases circulation to your extremities.
 

Cafatine Side Effects

Although side effects from Cafatine are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if either of these symptoms is severe or does not go away:

  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
  • leg weakness
  • chest pain
  • rapid heartbeat
  • drowsiness
  • convulsions or seizures
  • muscle pain or stiffness in the legs, arms, neck, or shoulders
  • confusion
  • swelling of the hands or legs
  • itching
  • coldness, numbness, and tingling of the fingers and toes
  • stomach pain
